If you are going to participate by telephone in the draft, you don't have to send in a list, but if you are not and don't send in a list, then the Commissioner, that's me, will draft for you.

East Asia axes Causwell

Duane Causwell has been cut by Dragons Coach Paul Bennett.

Steve Feldheim's OK in New York

Steve Feldheim, coach of the Brooklyn Tigers, is OK and so is his family. Steve lives in Brooklyn, but his wife works just a few blocks north of where the World Trade Center was. He emailed me today and told me of his wife Marilyn leaving her office building just as the second plane was crashing. While she walked back home over the Brooklyn Bridge, she saw the towers go down and people jumping off the buildings - all the horror.

My God.

Steve was in downtown Brooklyn when the planes hit, about a half-mile away across the river. Papers and office debris were landing in yards five miles away in Steve's home neighborhood. Steve's son Mike, 13, went into Manhattan to bring supplies and help out.

I tried to telephone Steve, but even today, on Sept. 16, I can't get through. But my email got through today and Steve replied to tell me this news. Steve, all of us in the SABL are so happy that you and your family were not hurt. We all are thinking of you. We love you and we all send our best to your, Marilyn and the rest of your family.

Drop Steve an email at his new address: mfeldheim@nyc.rr.com

Bakersfield cuts Burrell

Blades Coach David Squires has cut Scott Burrell.

McLean maroons three

Nationals Coach Rob Storey has cut Horace Grant, Eschmeyer and Buckner.

Miles mashes two

Bulldogs Coach Tom Jargo has cut Radojevic and Peeler.

The price of freedom is high . . .

The World Trade Center and Pentagon plane crashes on Sept. 11 comprise the worst single-day American death toll in our nation's history. In fact, we have to look back to the Civil War, 140 years ago, as the last time that we've suffered this much as a nation.

On behalf of the SABL, I want to express our deep shock, sorrow and grief for the lives lost. I think I speak for us all when I say that the terrorists may have started this but we as sure as hell are gonna finish it. As this horrible tragedy reminds us, freedom doesn't come cheap. You have to keep fightin' for it every day. And I'm sure we will this time, too.

I remember where I was and what I was doing when President Kennedy, Bobby Kennedy and John Lennon were shot. I remember where I was and what I was doing when Elvis and Princess Diana died. I'm sure we'll all remember what we were doing and where we were on Sept. 11, 2001, too.

God Bless America . . . and pass the ammunition.

2001 SABL Draft Order

The following is based on won-lost records and includes penalty point adjustments. Where won-lost records were tied, penalty points were used to break the ties. Also, divisional winners and the World Champions draft last:

Updated Draftable Players link is online

I just updated the 2001 Draftable Players link to include all the players that have been cut. The cut players are at the bottom of the list, so don't forget to check out that section when making your draft decisions. You might find a couple of interesting veterans that are now available.

Basketball annuals are on the newsstands

I just picked up three basketball annuals on Sept. 15 from Street & Smith, Athon and Monster. That means you can start scouting and making your draft plans now!

Druids keeps their promise - everyone is cut

Bettendorf Coach Mark Feeney has once again done something cruel and evil to his team - as promised, he has cut everyone so he can draft an entirely new team, the first time this has ever happened in SABL history. Mark has cut Hawkins, Perkins, Nesby, S. Elliott, M. Strickland, J. Barry and R. Harper.

We wish Mark good luck in starting over!

Garden gives up one more.

Garden City Gladiators Coach Josh Marquardt has cut C. Mills.

Almost everyone has paid their dues, but . . .

Almost everyone has either paid their SABL dues or has contacted me to say the check is in the mail. The dues were due Sept. 1. If you don't pay to play, you won't play in the SABL. No one will get tossed out of the SABL for not paying their dues until one week before the draft, Oct. 14. If I don't have your dues by then, you will be expelled from the SABL.

Paying your dues and staying on time are two of the hallmarks of the SABL. I know you guys understand that.

Welcome the Bakersfield Blades to the SABL

Let's all give a big SABL welcome to David Squires, who is the newest addition to the Second American Basketball League. David comes to us from the land of Buck Owens, Bakersfield, CA and he is taking over the Sublimity Senators franchise, divisional winners in the West last season. His new team name is the Bakersfield Blades.

Send David a note to make him feel at home. His address, etc., is:

David Squires, 4613 Stanton Way, Bakersfield, CA 93309 dsquires@bak.rr.com, Phone: 661-328-1967

Draft day moved back 1 week to Sunday, Oct. 14, 1 pm

In response to your requests, our 2001 Draft Day will be at 1 pm on Sunday, Oct. 14, instead of the previously scheduled Oct. 7. Strat is putting out the basketball game very late this year and we need to make sure that everyone who's ordered their cards and game gets them before draft day. This should do that. This means the draft will be held one week earlier than last year, instead of two weeks earlier.

This also means you have an extra week to decide on your cuts and to get your draft lists in. But it also means you only have one week to trade players after the draft. The new schedule is below:

Akron axes two

It is with great sadness that the Akron Blimps must announce the release of future Hall of Famer Charles Barkley.

"Charles probably could still play for us, but he just got too damn fat," said Blimps interim boss Red Auerbach.

Auerbach also announced that the Blimps have asked the league to free up two roster spots for the Blimps now that Barkley is gone.

"His fat ass took up two spots on the bench," Auerbach argued.

Also released was some guy named Hudson whom most people could barely remember. That brings the Blimp roster down to 13 players.

Bettendorf Druids continue "fire sale"

Time is running out on the Druids' fire sale. The most valuable items already are gone, but there still are a few players that might fit your team. Take your choice of Jon Barry, Tyrone Nesby, Ron Harper, Sean Elliott, Sam Perkins, Mark Strickland, Rick Fox or Hersey Hawkins. A third round pick or even a futures pick could get you any of these players. Of course, you could wait for the draft, but then somebody might grab up that last piece of your puzzle before you do. All of these players will be cut Sept. 8, so if you have any interest at all, don't wait. Pull the trigger on a deal today.

Garden guns down three

Garden City Gladiator Coach Josh Marquardt has cut N. Anderson, Phills and S. Mitchell.
