The SABL BS

Volume 2 Issue 80 July 2001

FROM COMMISSIONER SCOTT ELLIS, 2ND AMER. BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Who's trading?

I have now adjusted our rosters to reflect next season, which will start in NOVEMBER this year, a month earlier than we are used to:

6. Finney trades Glover, Cato and its 1st pick to Holcomb for Ratliff

5. Finney trades K. Bryant & D. Curry to the Aces for Iverson & B. Russell

4. Druids trade Porter to Miles for Hornacek.

3. Finney trades Holcomb's 1st pick and R. Strickland to Holcomb for Finney's 1st pick and C. Atkins.

2. Finney trades Posey, it's first pick and Garden City's first pick to Holcomb for R. Lewis & B. Barry.

1. Finney trades Ratliff, Oakley & Best to Holcomb for Oljauwon, Amechi & Posey & Garden City's 1st pick.

Well, not so fast . . .

Just heard from Chris Gertridge, who has renamed his team the Good News Roosters. He has moved to British Columbia. That means his team will stay in the West Division after all and the Miles Bulldogs will stay in the East Division as they were last season.

That also means that there will be no divisional swap between conferences. The East Division will stay in the Royal Conference and the West Division will stay in the Classic Conference.

In other words, everything is staying the same as it was last year.

Got that straight? I don't . . .

Miles Bulldog coach rejoices at realignment news

Tom Jargo reacts to our league's latest realignment:

The commish done good!

Miles coaches, players, fans and hangers-on approve the realignment."We must keep the Evil Druid running scared," said Bulldogs owner Tom Jargo. "His plot to take over the world through computer basketball must be foiled. Our goal is to thwart his evil plans."

"The Evil Druid must be stopped, and no one other than us can carry out such a mission," added Bulldogs forward Antoine Walker. "We hate guys with shaved heads."

"And, of course, this way, we can still beat up on the Evil Druid," said Bulldogs point guard Mike Bibby. "Six easy wins!"

The Evil Druid could not be reached for comment. Rumor has it he's too busy recruiting players from the WNBA for his team next year.

Division swap to hit SABL again this season

Yep, the arrival of that new coach in Thailand, Chris Gertridge of San Jose (I'm sure he'll be changing his team name soon), has necessitated a divisional rearrangement for our 2001-02 season. First off, San Jose will move to the East Division so he can play a lot of games with his friend and geographic soulmate, Coach Paul Bennett of East Asia.

Then, Coach Tom Jargo of Miles will move into the West Division.

Und finally, the West and East Divisions will swap conferences - the East will move to the Classic Conference and the West will move to the Royal Conference. That will accommodate Tom, who is friends with and lives close to everyone in the North Division and allow him to play a lot of games against them.

Of course, if anyone drops out of the SABL between now and the start of the season, that could change this alignment. But that's how it looks at this point. Please give me your feedback if you have any better ideas on how to line up the teams for this fall, and thanks.

Jeff Hornacek will retire as a Druid.

Bettendorf acquired Hornacek in a deal with the Miles Bulldogs. Terry Porter returns to the Dogs.

"I'm very happy to retire as a Druid," Hornacek said. "Actually, it was pure hell being with the Bulldogs. Jargo (Bulldogs owner Tom) is just too nice a guy. It makes me sick to be around such a pleasant and sweet guy. I prefer to hang around with arrogant bastards -- which is why I lasted so long in the NBA -- and quite frankly, when you think of arrogant bastards, you think of the Evil Druid Mark Feeney. He's my kind of guy."

"We're happy to have that rowdy SOB back where he belongs," Feeney said of Hornaceck. "It's time to party!"

Welcome to the SABL Clubhouse!

Akron Coach and longtime SABL member Dave Scott has started a new forum for us. It's the SABL Clubhouse on Yahoo! I'll let him tell you about it:

League members might have fun trying out the SABL Clubhouse at http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/secondamericanbasketballleagu

You can go there to post messages the whole league can see. Perhaps some trade talk could begin there.

It also has a schedule of all league events and deadlines that can be updated as the season goes on. There also is a chat room where league members can get together for some Cyberchat, perhaps cutting down on the long-distance charges. There's also a place to post photographs. One already is up.

To join, you will need to sign up a Yahoo account and then join the club. Instructions are on the site. It's all free.

Dave, thanks a lot! I encourage everyone to check this out and give it a try!

Gotta pay your dues if you want the SABL blues . . .

Paul has more details on Games 3 & 4 in SABL finals

East Asia Coach Paul Bennett has just sent more detailed reports on his two wins in Thailand:

Asian Hopes Surge After 2 Big Wins

The Dragons took Game 3 at home 115-107 by holding on to a 13 point lead in the first period. Asia started Outlaw at 3 against Hill and Jerome Williams at 5 on Webber. That and the Admiral outside on offence turned the tide in these first 2 games. The Aces had only 29 total rebounds and 26 turnovers. Shaq had 28, Eddie Jones 26 and almost everyone on both teams contributed, as both shot 54%. I guess Chris Whitney played the biggest part by scoring 15 in 16 mins. on 5-6 shooting and 3-3 from way downtown.

Game 4 proved Asia's best game of the year as they took a 139-115 victory. Asia pressed once again for most of the game and started the same lineup as last game. Once again both teams shot 54% but Eddie was unstoppable for Asia as he nailed 38 on 12-18 from the floor (5-8 3's) and 9-9 from the line. The Aces had 24 turnovers compared to 12 for the Dragons. Big Jerome scored 23, as did the Admiral in this one, while Shaq led his pack of stars with 32. I guess the big story here is the fact that Asia had 36 assists and the Aces 27, which is the first time Asia has ever outpassed St. Lucie. Whitney was huge again with 12 in 17 mins, with 8 assists and 2-2 from long.
