Dazzlers down Jams in Chapel Hill

Davenport defeated Chapel Hill at the Dean Dome 100 - 98.  The Dazzlers were tough on the boards (43 - 36 edge) and got a nice double double from Clarence Weatherspoon (10/10).  The Jams could not overcome a horrible game from scoring leader Antawn Jamison, who shot a miserable 7 - 26 from the field.

Bakersfield back in action soon

Coach David Squires is getting his new computer next week and that means he'll be ready to play his games from Feb. 1 on. So, go ahead and keep autoplaying Bakerfield, home and away games, for December and January, but if you play the Blades in February or March, wait until you get his instructions and send him instructions, too, after Feb. 1.

New phone number for Iowa Tornadoes

Coach Dennis Derby has a new phone number: 563-445-7529.

Miles mauls River City

Miles took five of six games from River City. Miles swept at River City, while the Renegades managed to take the last game at Miles.

At River City:
Game 1 (99-82): Miles shot 54 percent; River City 42 percent. Ron Mercer led Miles with 17 points. Michael Dickerson had 19 for River City.

Game 2 (123-97): Miles 54 percent; River City 41 percent. Antoine Walker led seven Miles players in double-figures with 30 points. Dikembe Mutombo added 16 points and 17 rebounds. Reggie Miller led the Renegades with 24 points.

Game 3 (100-82): Miles 49 percent; River City 34 percent. Mercer had 32 for Miles. Miller scored 19 for River City.

Game 3 (100-90): River City 44 percent in avoiding the season sweep. Miller 28 points. Dickerson 18, Marcus Fizer 17. Mike Bibby had 19 for Miles.

Nats nail River City

The Nationals had two easy wins, 125-75 at home and 105-85 on the road to sweep their series with the Renegades.  River City was unable to compete on the boards (outrebounded 106-62 in the two games) or shooting (the renegades hit 35 percent in the two games).  Even Kevin Dooling hit double figures in the home game, although Stack led the scoring in both bames, with 29 and 39.  Reggie Miller was high for River City with 27 (12 plus 15).

Blackhawks fail to scalp Nats at McLean

Tri-City played an aggressive defense that kept them close for much of hte contest, but that agressive defense led to 36 fouls (called) and 52 Nats' free throws, as McLean prevailed 115-102.  Stackhouse's 32 led six Nats in double figures, while Marbury had 28 for the Blackhawks.

Miles mows down Tigers at the Mayo

The Miles Bulldogs are guaranteed no less than a .500 record after the first two months of the season following a 4-game sweep of the Brooklyn Tigers before a snowmobiling crowd at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn.

With two wins already noted in Brooklyn, the Bulldogs pull to 18-15 with three road games (2 with the Tigers and 1 with Garden City) left in January.

Game 1 (135-125): A well-played game with both teams running and gunning and combining for only 22 turnovers (Miles with a season-low 8 miscues). Ron Mercer led the Bulldogs with 29 points. Antoine Walker scored 17 and added 9
rebounds, while Mike Bibby had the first of 4 double-doubles with 13 points and 14 assists for Miles. Miles also got a spark off the bench from guards Antoinio Daniels and Terry Porter. Daniels scored 15 points in just 14 minutes, while Porter added 13 points in 13 minutes. Lamar Odom led the Tigers with 30 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists.Cuttino Mobley punched in 20 points, and Jeff McInnis added 16.

Game 2 (128-111): Taking just an 8-point lead into the fourth quarter, Miles built a 20-point cushion en route to victory. Miles won the battle of the boards, 54-39, including 18-11 on the offensive glass. The Bulldogs overcame a frigid shooting night by Walker, who was just 6 of 20 from the floor. Daniels was once-again a spark off the bench, leading Miles with 19 points on 8 of 11 from the field in just 17 minutes. Mercer pumped in 24 points and added 7 assists, while Bibby recorded 16 points and 11 assists. Odom was the star again for Brooklyn, with 20 points. Known for his defense, Bruce Bowen
was an offensive spark for the Tigers with 17 points.

Game 3 (112-101): Miles used a big third quarter to turn a 2-point halftime lead into a 17-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs overcame 26 turnovers to notch the win. Walker heated up, scoring 31 points on 13 of 18 from the field. Bibby was Mr. Consistent with 15 points and 14 assists, while Dikembe Mutombo enjoyed a solid day with 9 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks. Odom was the leader for Brooklyn with 21 points, but shot just 8 of 27 from the field. Mobley added 20 points. Malik Rose had a double-double off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brooklyn was just
2 of 16 from beyond the arc, shooting 44 percent for the game.

Game 4 (111-100): Miles built an 11-point lead at halftime. Every time Brooklyn made a run in the second half, Miles countered with a run of its own. The game got sloppy with the teams combining for 42 turnovers. Miles used a solid team effort to overcome another frigid night by Walker, who hit just 4 of 15 shots and committed 7 turnovers. Despite Walker's chill, Miles shot 52 percent from the floor. Bibby led the Bulldogs with 25 points and dished out 11 assists without committing a turnover. Mercer added 17 points and Lo. Wright chipped in 15. Bibby, Mercer and Wright combined to hit 26 of 41 shots from the field. Odom led Brooklyn with 29 points on just 10 of 24 from the field. Mobley added 20. Brookly shot a chilling 42 percent from the floor.

"Mike Bibby was our All-Sar for this series," Miles Coach Hayden Fry said. "He was incredible."

"The last two games were frustating," Brooklyn Coach Tim Floyd said. "We shot poorly, especially Lamar; otherwise, we had the chances to win both those games. And Game 2, we just fell apart in the fourth quarter. Very frustrating."

One sidenote: The series featured the noticeable lack of performance of first-round pick Kenyon Martin for the Tigers. Martin never hit double-digits in scoring, despite playing extensive minutes. And in Game 2, he managed to foul out in just 16 minutes. "Where, oh where, did Kenyon go?" Floyed mused. "We sure could have used him."

Nats take 3 or 4 from Jams at McLean

The curse of the early 20 point lead was evident throughout this tightly contested series.  In every game, one team went out to a lead of nearly 20 points by early in the third period, only to blow all or most of the lead.  In games three and four, the team that was behind went on to win.
In game one, the Nats took their lead with a whirlwind early part of the third period and held on to win, 110-101.  Stackhouse had 27, and the Nats shot 53 free throws and had a 50-35 rebound edge.  Antwan Jamieson had 29 points but played only 24 minutes due to foul trouble.  Game two was pretty sloppy, but the Nats held on after the Jams came back to tie.  Jamieson outscorded Stackhouse again, 29-28, but the Jams couldn't overcome 42 percent shooting (0 for 8 on threes) and a failure to score on their last four possessions.  Chapel Hill came back all the way in game three as Jamieson's 42 led the way.  Stackhouse had 38, but 22 turnovers gave the Jams numerous fastbreak opportunities.  In game four, it was Chapel Hill that took a 65-44 halftime lead but could not hold on.  McL:ean had 18 turnovers at halftime, but only seven in the second half.  Stackhouse outscored Jamieson for the first time in the series 31-30, but Jamieson was only 12 for 29 from the floor (41 percent) and missed several in key situations down the stretch when the entire Jams lineup tired.  The Nats had another big edge on foul shots 39-18.

Tulsa takes two from Roosters at Good News

Here are reports from Games 2 and 3 in Good News:

Game 1

Tulsa defeated the Roosters 118-105 as Darius Miles led 7 Twisters in double figures. LaFrentz had 11
boards to lead the Twisters to a 49-38 edge over the Roosters. Pierce led the Roosters with 25 and 14 free
throws. The Roosters couldn't handle the inside game of the Twisters

game 2 results 101-86 Tulsa

Wesley scored 21 and Davis 20 and 11 boards to lead the Twisters in the Henhouse. Shareef had 28 and 11
boards as well as 18 free throw attempts. The Roosters shot a miserable 34% for the game.

Game 3 saw the Roosters salvage one home win 108-95 over Tulsa. Shareef scored 32 and had 11 rebounds and
Pierce added 28 for the Roosters.

Dragons take Longhorns in tight home match

East Asia remained undefeated over the last 2 seasonns at home, with a close 93-85 victory over Finney. Asia was led by by Armstrong with 21 and Mason with 18 and 10 boards. Wallace had 11 rebounds and 5 blocks and Jerome Williams had 10 rebounds in 15 minutes as the home Dragons crashed the boards to a 54-42 advantage in a poor shooting contest. Iverson led all scorers with 25 but shot 35% on the night. Theo Ratliff had a great game with 15, 11 boards and 2 blocks. Action now shifts to Finney for the lone visit of the year.

Druids bedeviled at McLean

It wasn't a blow out, but the Nats wound up with a solid win 115-99 behind 58 percent shooting and a 34-9 advantage in free throws.  Solid games from Sabonis and Stith, who had 19 apiece, kept it close.  But Bettendorf, who fell behind 31-17 after the first quarter, only managed one run at the Nats, closing to 6 points late in the third period.  But Andre Miller (20 points and 10 assists) and Stackhouse (27 points) enabled the Nats to pull away in the fourth period.

Jams shock Iowa in Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill defeated Iowa 112 - 103 as the traditionally porous Jam defense yielded a measley 38% FG pct for Iowa.  Antawn Jamison led the way with 29 points and 12 boards.  Iowa's fabulous superstar triumvirate of Vince Carter,
Tracy McGrady and Stevie Francis shot a combined 19 - 56!  The Jams gathered at mid court after the game and bowing meekly towards the Iowa bench chanted, "We are not worthy."

Some news from Galactic-land

Brooklyn fans have hope for the future

Here's a report from Tiger Coach Steve Feldheim:

The Tigers record now stands at 7-20.  Not that much better than last season’s .220 pct.  But they’re giving the Brooklyn fans some hope.  Except for 3-4 blowouts they’ve stayed competitive most games.  Coach Tim Floyd is excited about this year’s team.  After a 2-14 start including 6 and 8 game losing streaks the Tiger went 5-4 until running into the Bulldogs (lost the first 2 of 4).

Owner Steve Feldheim has shown less optimism than coach Floyd and is losing patience with head cases Lamar Odom and Kenyon Martin, who were expected by some to lead the resurgence of this team.  Some local scribes have suggested that the current behavioral theme in the Brooklyn locker room might suggest that Charles Barkley should be brought into coach, Dennis Rodman coaxed out of retirement, and a traded made for Rasheed Wallace.  Future scouting will be done at the Betty Ford clinic and via local police blotters.

Bulldogs luck out against Gladiators in Miles

Miles found out it's better to be lucky than good during a 99-96 victory over Garden City before a lottery-winning crowd at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn.

The Bulldogs played most of the game without leading scorer Antoine Walker, who picked up two quick fouls and played just 17 minutes before fouling out with 1:35 left in the game. Miles also overcame a stunning 31 turnovers.

"I'll have to look at the box score, because I don't know how the hell we won this game," Miles Coach Hayden Fry said.

Garden City helped out the Bulldogs by shooting just 35 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs shot 53 percent, including 7 of 10 from beyond the arc.

"We let one get away on the road," said Garden City forward Vin Baker, who led the Gladiators with 20 points and 7 rebounds. "We didn't take advantage of the opportunities given us."

It was a close game all the way. With Miles leading 93-89, Dikembe Mutombo hit a free throw, and Mike Bibby stole the ball and scored on the fastbreak to boost the Bulldogs' lead to 96-89 with 37 seconds left. Each team exchanged free throws down the stretch, and Miles led 99-93 with just 3 ticks left. Rashard Lewis hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

"Bibby's steal was crucial," Fry said. "That gave us the spark we needed and helped build a little cushion. And Lo (Wright) and Dikembe hit clutch free throws to maintain that cushion."

Bibby led the Bulldogs with 20 points, while Wright chipped in 14 points and 8 rebounds with extended playing time in place of Walker, who was limited to just 5 points on the night.

Joe Smith and Lindsey Hunter added 15 apiece for the Gladiators.

McLean rips Tornadoes

Iowa shot like they were playing in a windstorm - 35 percent fromt he floor - as the Nats tood an early lead, extended it to 20 in the third quarter and held on to win 98-89.  Vince Carter had 28, but only hit 9 of 27 shots as he was the featured offensive player due to McGrady's foul trouble.  Jerry Stackhouse led the Nats with 35.

Finney fries Bulldogs in Miles

Miles let one slip away as Finney won a barn-burner 123-121 before a icy crowd at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn.

Mike Miller hit a game-winning three-pointer with 3 seconds left to boost the Longhorns.

It was a close game the whole way as neither team played defense and both teams shot well from the field (Finney 54% and Miles 55%). Miles carried a 6-point lead into the fourth quarter. Antoine Walker  hit a three-pointer to give Miles a 119-118 lead with 42 seconds left. Miller got Finney back in front on two free throws. Mike Bibby put the Bulldogs in the lead 121-120 with a jumper with 8 seconds left before Miller's heroics.

"We let this one slip away," Miles Coach Hayden Fry said. "Johnny Newman's foul on Miller after Antoine gave us the lead was inexcusable. Johnny won't be playing late in any more games, you can bank on that. It's disappointed to let one get away.

"But give Miller credit; he was clutch for the Longhorns," Fry added.

Allen Iverson led Finney with 42 points, while Miller chipped in 17. Chucky Atkins added 16 for the Longhorns.

Walker paced Miles with 32 points. Bibby chipped in 22 points and 9 assists for the Bulldogs. Ron Mercer added 20.

Results from the Druids at Bettendorf

Andre Miller produces a triple double with 12 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds and Jerry Stackhouse scores 34 in McLean's 129-121 victory over Bettendorf at The Mark of The Quad-Cities.

Chapel Hill smashes Bettendorf 123-91 behind Antwon Jamison's 31 points. Steve Nash had 27 and George Lynch grabbed 17 rebounds.

John Stockton produced a double-double by halftime and Galactic had no trouble cruising to a 133-101 victory over Bettendorf to gain revenge for last year's loss to the Druids.

Iowa sweeps division rival Bettendorf (8 games).

December stats, standings are posted!!!!

Okey, dokey, the first results of the year are now on our website. Check out our League Leaders, Standings/Team Highs, Rosters & Stats, and League Totals.

So far, East Asia is on top in the East (what else is new) and Iowa is leading in the North. St. Lucie is cremating the South, while Finney, Bakersfield and Holcomb are duking it out in the West.

Tulsa has started out 2-21, an all-time record in SABL futility, but Phillip Creider is in the lead for next year's Michael Jordan sweepstakes.

Grant Hill declared legally dead by St. Lucie County

Following futile attempts to trade Grant Hill to nearly every team in the league, St. Lucie Coach Scott Ellis has manipulated hometown courts into declaring the erstwhile Ace star legally dead. This will save the Aces millions in salary payments to his bereaved family, who haven't seen the former Fab Fiver since the start of this year's regular season.

"Hey, he's a real Nowhere Man and he won't be playing in the SABL for two years. I can't afford to pay that slacker all that money for nothing," said Ellis.

Meanwhile, Hill spokesman and legal advisor Basketball Jones told the Detroit Free Press today that there is a contract out on his client.

"After Grant got hurt in the off-season, Coach Ellis kept hounding Hill, pressuring him to get back and play or else. I guess that visit from Rodman and Bill Lambieer in November really scared Grant, because he went into hiding after that and nobody's seen him since," said Jones.

Rodman said the visit was merely an invitation for Grant to join the WWF while he was recuperating.

"Bill and I demonstrated a couple of choke holds, and a body slam, nothing intimidating at all," Rodman explained. "We came back next week with the contract - er - wrestling contract, but Grant was gone."

Jones maintains that since the Aces couldn't kill Hill, they bribed a St. Lucie County judge to declare him legally dead instead.

"We really appreciate all Grant has done for us and we will miss him. Please contact the St. Lucie County Clerk's Office if you are interested in trading for him," Ellis said.

Stats, standings, still not up yet due to penalty point work

Sorry guys, but it's 9 pm January 6 as I write this and that means the December stats and standings will not be posted this weekend as I planned, due to all the schedule checking I had to do to compile our first penalty point report. I will get them posted January 7 or 8 and hopefully I'll get a lot more December stats from you to post!

Bulldogs turn off Heat in Miles

The Miles Bulldogs turned up the heat on Holcomb and cruised to a 118-99 victory before a patriotic crowd at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn.

The Bulldogs overwhelmed the Heat in the first half, taking a 70-36 lead at halftime. Miles got sloppy in the second half, but Holcomb was never able to get close.

"Everything clicked in the first half," Miles Coach Hayden Fry said. "We didn't play smart basketball in the second half, but when you're playing with a huge lead, that happens. I don't think any team could blow a 34-point halftime lead."

Miles shot 45 percent from the floor, while Holcomb shot 46 percent. But the Bulldogs took 19 more shots and dominated the boards, 55-37, including 14-5 on the offensive boards.

Off the bench, Lo Wright led Miles with 20 points, and Antonio Daniels pitched in 15 points in just 14 minutes. They were a combined 13 of 19 from the field. Ron Mercer scored 19, and Antoine Walker added 17 for the Bulldogs. Mike Bibby paced the offense with 8 assists.

Tim Duncan starred for Holcomb with 29 points, 10 rebounds and 7 blocks. Jason Terry pitched in 19, and Ron Artest tallied 15. Travis Best dished out 11 assists

"We didn't see the real Holcomb today," Miles guard Ron Mercer said. "They are a much better team than they showed today. Sometimes, games like this just happen. Fortunately, they don't get another crack at us during the regular season."

December trading over, all trades are for next year

Our December trading period is now over. For the first time in SABL history, no midseason trades have been made. That means the rosters as you received them on the SABL.EXE league file are correct and no trades need to be made!

From now on, all trades will take effect next season.

Dragons and Heat warm it up

East Asia had perhaps it's best game of the year against a very strong Holcolm squad, winning 123-96 despite a 38-28 fourth quarter Heat barrage. Armstrong had 30, Jones 27, Outlaw 19 in 26 mins, and Mason had 23, 10 rebs, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in his best game of the season. Asia made 31-35 from the charity stripe and shot 12-22 from way downtown. Holcolm had 32 assists in defeat and were led by Artest with 19 and Terry with 17. Duncan was limited to 13 and 3 boards in a pitched battle with Ben Wallace (9 rebs, 3 steals, 2 blocks).

Dragons slay Gladiators in Thailand

East Asia held Garden City to 30 1st half points en route to a 95-79 victory. This defensive battle also marked the 1st time in 22 games that East Asia was held to under 100 points. The Dragons used a balanced attack that saw 5 players score more than 12, as well as Ben Wallace's 17 rebounds (50 for the team), to defeat the Gladiators. Garden City was led by Joe smith with 23 and 10 boards (30% shooting).

Dragons take two from Roosters

East Asia used a 16 point fourth quarter advantage to hold of a game Good News side 110-95 in Chiang Mai last night. The Dragon defense stepped up late and held the Roosters to 38% shooting and Paul Pierce to 15 points. Donyell Marshall was wonderful, with 22 points and 14 boards. Asia had 13 steals, 10 blocks and shot 54%. Jones had 29, Mason 19 and 13 boards, and Wallace had 13 boards and 3 blocks for the winners.

The Dragons started big at the Henhouse and rode a 34-22 1st period to a 115-99 victory. Asia shot 61% from the floor and 10-18 from downtown in an offensive show. Armstrong, Jones and McKie all scored more than 18 for the second game in a row and the Admiral notched a double-double for the winners. Pierce had 26, Shareef 24 and pesky Donyell 19 for the Roosters. Rooster rumors fly regarding a possible motivational seminar to be held by the Ghost Of Colonel Harlen Saunders.

Dragon Coach Bennett also had a few words to say about the Commissioner's new pre-season predictions. "He (Ellis) always picks us to finish 2nd or 3rd. And 2 time defending conference champs! With Eddie and Darrel both scoring more than 25 a game, Wallace getting 12 boards and 2 blocks, and the team averaging over 113, he must be out in the Florida sun to much. RICHMOND!!! Wait till the Aces come to Thailand." "Land of Smiles, Bull..it!", quoted Anthony Mason.

Jams top Dragons in Chapel Hill barnburner

Chapel Hill won a thriller in the Dean Dome 110 - 109 behind Antawn Jamison's 30 points.  The Dragons had a chance to win as a Darrell Armastrong shot bounced off the rim with 2 seconds left in the game.  The Jams were crushed on the boards 39 -22 but shot a season-high 55% from the floor.  Armstrong led East Asia with 30 points.  Steve Nash (CH) had the game's only double-double with 19 points and 10 assists.

Are you using the correct SABL league file?

Got this email recently from Brooklyn Coach Steve Feldheim:

"Scott, I'm getting gameplans from people who still have Duncan on my roster.  Hope that doesn't screw up your stats.. Guess you should post something on the site.  Took this old brain a few games to remember he was erroneously placed on my roster early on.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year"

As you remember, I emailed all of you TWO league files this year. The first one had a few errors in it, including the one Steve Feldheim talks about above. I had to email you all another, corrected one, which is "SABL.EXE" and it's also posted on our website.

No stats have been messed up so far that I have noticed, but I did get one report of game files not importing properly, probably because the wrong league files are being used. Please make sure you have installed are using the SABL.EXE league file and download, install it and use it if you are not.

Guys, this is a major reason why I'm considering asking you to play PC Action Basketball next season instead of Strat. Programming errors like this don't happen in that game and they don't happen in Strat's computer baseball game.

Bulldogs win thriller over McLean at the Mayo

Miles finished December on a high note with a thrilling 120-119 victory over McLean before a frostbit crowd at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester, Minn.

The game wasn't quite as close as the score indicates. Miles had a four-point lead with 2 second to go, and McLean's Jerry Stackhouse hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the final margin.

Trailing 105-102 with 5:53 remaining in the game, the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run to grab a 110-105 lead. Johnny Newman hit a jumper and added two free throws during the run. Miles maintained the cushion down the stretch, taking a 120-114 lead in the final half-minute of the game. Jalen Rose hit two free throws before Stackhouse's buzzer-beating three-pointer to close the scoring.

"Newman really gave us a spark when we needed it," Miles Coach Hayden Fry said.

Newman finished his best game as a Bulldog with 18 points in just 21 minutes off the bench. Antoine Walker led Miles with 22 points and 9 rebounds, while Mike Bibby pitched in 20 points and 8 assists.

Stackhouse led the Nationals with 42 points. Rose added 25 points, and Andre Miller dished out 15 assists for McLean.

After a dismal start, the Bulldogs finish December 7-11.

TULSA FALLS TO BROOKLYN AS THE TWISTERS STINK UP THE JOINT

Tulsa’s losing ways continued as the Brooklyn Tigers beat the Twister’s 95-94. Game came down to the wire with the visitors grabbing the lead and victory with a last minute fastbreak basket by Kenyon Martin. Martin further sealed the victory by making a key defensive play on Twister Antonio Davis ( steal off his "defense column" ). It was ironic that Martin played such a key part in the outcome of the game seeing as how he sat out most the game with foul trouble, allowing him only 12 minutes playing time. Of his 9 points scored, 6 came in the final 2:46 of the game.

Other contributors for the Tigers were Bruce Bowen ( 17 pts, 3-5 3pt shooting);

Jeff McInnis ( 15 pts, 7 assists ); and Cutino Mobley ( 13 pts ). No Twister player was worthy of note.

"Damn," exclaimed Coach Creider, "we are terrible. What else would you expect from bad play and bad coaching? We shoot 41% from the field and turn the ball over 18 times. As for myself, I made some coaching blunders. Shoulda run out the clock at the end of the first period. Instead, left just enough time ( 3 seconds ) for Raef ( LaFrentz ) to commit a stupid foul to send Malik Rose to the foul line. That made free throw turned out to be pivotal. " When asked about player rotations, Creider responded "I definitely need to review things. Shammond Williams isn’t giving us jack for his 12+ minutes per game. May end up increasing Marion’s workload as well as Piatkowski’s. I must confess that, after our first 8 home games, I did not expect to be a mere 1-7. At this rate, I won’t have a job next season."
