Issue 111 February 2004
FROM COMMISSIONER SCOTT ELLIS, SECOND AMERICAN BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Penalty point report
Now the part of my commissioner's duties that I like the least, assessing penalty points. Lateness kills leagues and it won't be tolerated in the SABL. However, please let me know ASAP if I've made an error. Here's the current tally:
Richmond - 16 points total. Richmond drops 5 places down in our 2004 Draft
4 points for no results and no instructions for Feb. 9, Richmond vs. Holcomb
4 points for no results and no instructions for Feb. 11, Richmond vs. Bakersfield
4 points for no results and no instructions for Feb. 13, Richmond vs. Cave Creek
4 points for no results and no instructions for Feb. 15, Richmond vs. Tulsa
Akron - 2 points total.
2 points for no results for Feb. 11, Akron at Cave Creek
Remember, when you are two weeks late, you can get penalty points. Make sure you send out your instructions. Make sure you send out your results. Make sure you contact the opposing coach to ask why they are late with results or instructions. Let me know if mitigating circumstances, such as a death in the family or vacations, are gonna make your late. If you do all of these things, you won't get penalty points.
Remember, these are your draft picks at stake. Don't blow 'em.

Strat's patch saves game files differently - rename them immediately!
Davenport Dazzler Coach Kevin Feeney has caught this Amazing change that came with the new Strat basketball computer game patch. Of course, the game company didn't bother to tell us about this change in it's patch notes:
The game renames league games files by date. Sounds good, right? It isn't. Let me give you an example:
In our schedule this year, Games 1, 2 & 3 on Feb. 2 are Iowa at River City. The game will save Game 1 of this series as 200304X IOW@RIV 2-2.gfl. It will also save Game 2 as 200304X IOW@RIV 2-2.gfl. And it will save Game 3 as 200304X IOW@RIV 2-2.gfl.
What this means is that if you have a three- or four-game series, it will overwrite all the games until you only have the last game in the series on your hard drive. And that means you won't be able to send me or your opponent three game files for that three game series, 'cause you only have one game file. And I must have the game files so I can import your results into our official league database - my computer.
Great, huh.
OK, I can fix this next year by spending even more hours devising a new type of schedule to get around it, but for this year, we are gonna have to do this:
AFTER YOU FINISH EACH INDIVIDUAL GAME OF YOUR SERIES, STOP AND RENAME THE GAME FILE.
If you do this faithfully, there will be no problems. If you don't, I'll have to manually create the won-lost result for you here on my computer, the official SABL database. There will be no other alternative.
Have a nice day.

Thanks to a heads-up from that Amazing Kevin Feeney of the Davenport Dazzlers, we know that Strat-O-Matic has the patch up.
Download this patch immediately and run it. It's at the top of the home page of the Strat-O-Matic Game Company's website, http://www.strat-o-matic.com
It fixes a lot of minor problems, including the big early fatigue bug-a-boo. Actually, that's a major problem.
It also adds back in the Neutral Court option, but we will not use that this year during the regular season. Since we started by playing as the AWAY team, we will finish that way. However, in the playoffs, we will revert to the Neutral Court option.
If you have any problems patching the game or if your game gives you problems after you patch it, I will be emailing a new league file ASAP. However, this league file includes our March trades, so you need to get your February games played ASAP.

The Longshots sweep the Buzz in Cave Creek.
Game 1: Cave Creek wins 106-91. Snow goes for 22 pts on 6 of 8
shooting and 10/11 from the line. Louisana's double teaming of Pierce fails, as
Snow hits some open shots and Pierce still goes for 29. Louisana shoots 38%
despite Big Whitey's performance (Nesterovic) going 8-13 for 17 pts and 8
rebounds.
Game 2: Louisiana continues to double team Pierce and leave Snow open. However,
it was not Snow who picked up the slack. In the 1st 5 minutes of the game,
Maurice Taylor scored 10 points and grabbed 3 rebounds. Pierce does not even
score until there are 5 minutes left in the first half. Hilario scores 21 points
and goes to the line 18 times. Louisiana again had trouble finding the basket,
shooting 37%, led by Mashburns 8-29 performance.
Game 3: Louisiana leads by 4 at half, and leads by 4-9 points through most of
the 3rd quarter. But a late 3rd quarter rally by the Cave Creek Longshots
carries over to the fourth quarter, and Cave Creek wins 110-103. Masburn and
Harpring had 31 and 24 points respectively. Big Whitey again was solid with 10
points and 11 rebounds. For Cave Creek it was truly a team effort. Richardson

NATS GAIN SPLIT WITH IOWA IN MCLEAN
The Tornadoes won the first two games of the series, but McLean took the last two to gain a split.
Game 1. Tracy McGrady had 38 points on 19 shots from the field to lead the Tornadoes, 113-104. McLean took an early 36-20 first quarter lead, but were outscored in the second and third quarters 69-41. A late rally was insufficient. Corey Maggette, Gilbert Arenas, and Richard Jefferson each had twenty or more for the Nats.
Game 2. McGrady again led the Tornadoes with 34 in a 128-111 win. Steve Francis added 20 and Jefferson led the Nats with 25. Ninety-one percent free throw shooting and 22 Nats turnovers doomed any comeback.
Game 3. Fortunes changed drastically as the Nats were able to build on an early lead and wound up in with a 120-93 blowout win. Arenas had 29 and Jerry Stackhouse 22 as McGrady, facing more double teaming, was held to 22.
Game 4. The last game was a barn burner with neither team being able to stop the other. The Nats executed down the stretch to pull it out 128-126. Vince Carter had 30 and Keith Van Horn had 21, but McGrady, hobbled by early foul trouble was held to 10 points on three for 14 shooting. Stackhouse led the Nats with 32 and Maggette added 27, as the Nats overall hit 63 percent from the floor.
