The SABL BS

Volume 2 Issue 60 November 1999

FROM COMMISSIONER SCOTT ELLIS, 2ND AMER. BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Who's trading?

A great idea from Akron Coach Dave Scott on how to make keeping track of trading easier: From now on, I'll be numbering the trades. This way, you know what trades to make in what order on your own SABL league teams. If you look below, you'll see an example of this. This is important because of the way SOM Basketball is programmed. Any player out of order on your league rosters will make our official league stats scrambled and cause me and other coaches a lot of repair work.

So, please make your trades in the order listed to make sure everything runs right. If you need to see the October trade order, please scroll to that month below.

Please make the adjustments below to your league file immediately:

3. Miles sends Horace Grant and Darrick Martin to Bettendorf for Tim Thomas and Hoiberg

4. Miles sends T. Thomas and its 2nd pick to Galactic for Sura.

Please make these adjustments below to your league file only after you have played all your December games with all the teams involved in these trades. THESE TRADES TAKE EFFECT JANUARY 1, 2000:

5. St. Lucie trades Rice, Chapel Hill's 2nd St. Lucie's 2001 1st, 2001 2nd and 2001 3rd to Miles for Karl Malone

6. St. Lucie trades M. Smith to Great Lakes for W. Williams and Great Lakes' 2nd pick.

Use Miles' (Tom Jargo's) AOL email address for now

Bulldog Coach Tom Jargo is having trouble with his other email addresses, so he wants us to use his America On Line email address for the time being: Tsamcub@aol.com

Miles (8-10) beats Tigers (6-16) in Brooklyn

Coach Steve Feldheim reports:

BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE - SPORTS

11-28-99

How did the Tigers ever beat the bulldogs in Miles.  Malone alone is enough
to topple my team.

Miles wins 102-81.   Malone 26-14, Christie 19 pts., Elliott  reb., Mutumbo
8 reb.
5 Bulldogs in double figures.

Trent 18-8, 6 pts., 3 reb., in garbage time.  P.J. - 8 reb.

FT's made the game.  Miles scored 27 from the line, Brooklyn
9 an 18 pt. deficit.  Miles did lead by over 30 at one time.

Aces are SABL's first 20-game winners this season

St. Lucie (20-1) has taken three home wins from Finney, Garden City and Holcomb, as the West Division checks into 1999-2000 competition for the first time this season. A few more results from the West and stats will be posted!

Brooklyn wins three more at home vs. Akron

Maybe the Tigers don't have a lock on the first pick next year after all. Brooklyn (6-15) won three of four at home vs. the Blimps (4-4). Here's the story from Tiger Coach Steve Feldheim:

Brooklyn eagle -sports -

11/28/99

Nate Bowman is beginning to sweat again. After a 1-11 start, the TIGERS have
beaten Miles and swapped 3-1 home series with Akron.

At the Jackie Robinson Arena in Metrotech, Brooklyn won game 1 93-82
, an 11 pt. Spread.  Unheard of with this team.  Trent Had 12 pts 11 reb,
Cuttino Mobley?? scored 20 pts.  Garnett led the Blimps with 25-14.

Game2:  Brooklyn narrowly avoided sweeping Akron 4-0. With 6 secs. To play,
score 85-85, the Tigers inbounded to Trent, Garnett stole the ball, scored
on the break, and the game was mercifully over.
If there had been time left, Bowman's outrageous behavior, {throwing chairs,
smacking players, etc,.}  Would have had him ejected.
Garnett 25-10 led Akron as usual, Trent was 17-7.

Game 3: Brooklyn 82-76.  Garnett 21-7.  Trent 25-10.  {The battle of the
young studs.}

Game 4: Brooklyn 107-2.  They actually led by 20+ at times.
Trent 18-4,  Garnett held to 11.   Akron had six players in double figures,
Brooklyn 7.

For the series Garnett {20.5-9.3}   topped Trent {18-8).   Allen contributed
12.5 per/game to the Blimps.  Tigers received 13.8 from Mobley.

Marvin Barnes was seen having lunch at all the local sports hangouts.  Is he
looking for a certain owner.?

Brooklyn is now 6-15, projecting well beyond the assignment given coach
Bowman {20 wins or less for the season}.

The Tigers have won 5 of there last 9.          Frightening.

Feeneys fight it out as Druids drub Dazzlers 3-1 at home

Coach Kevin Feeney of Davenport (3-11) dropped to the bottom of the North Division after losing 3 of 4 to another alleged Feeney, Mark of Bettendorf (5-2). Bettendorf is now in first in the North, East Asia tops the East and St. Lucie is lulling the South. No results yet from the West Division. Once I get some, I'll be posting stats for all teams and all the league.

Brooklyn wins their third, East Asia loses their second

Miles (7-10) topped East Asia (14-2) at home, dealing Coach Paul Bennett only his second loss this year. Miles lost to Brooklyn (3-14) at home, however.

Brooklyn does not have the worst winning percentage. That goes to Tulsa, who is now 1-7. The Aces have the league's best winning percentage, at 17-1.

Miles tops Akron 102-92 at the Blimps' arena

Garnett and Allen got into foul trouble and eventually each fouled out, bringing Miles record to 5-7.Akron is 3-2.

Brooklyn wins another game, now 2-14

The Akron Blimps start their season with a 3-1 series win at home over Brooklyn. Here's the report on one of those games from Akron Coach Dave Scott:

Alan Henderson scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Akron Blimps
defeated the Brooklyn ??? 105-104 in double overtime. Former Ohio University star Gary Trent led Brooklyn with 22 points and immediately renews speculation that the Blimps might make a trade offer for the star forward.

Aces and Asia flying high early in season

After talking 7 of 8 from the Tulsa Twisters, the defending SABL champs, the St. Lucie Aces, are 17-1. St. Lucie's only loss so far this year is at Tulsa. Galactic has had their first loss, away vs. Davenport, so Steve Walters is now 9-1.

Meanwhile, in the other, Royal Conference, East Asia's recent four game road sweep of the defending Royal Conference champion Tigers puts the Dragons at 13-1.

Best season start in SABL history underway

I'd love to post stats and standings, but I can't do it yet. I have no games at all from the West division and no games from Akron, Richmond, Philly or Tri City. The season doesn't officially start until Dec. 1, so no one is anyway near behind yet, of course, but it doesn't hurt to get ahead like so many coaches have this season.

Thanks to everyone who has made this early SABL start the best in our league's history. We had a great draft, we're having a great season and it's clear we have great coaches who are having a lot of fun. I'll do my best to keep everyone up to date on everything.

Brooklyn continues descent into SABL Hell

Let's let the "other" Steve in our league, Coach Feldheim, describe this:

Nate Bowman and owner Steve Feldheim are kicking back their heels.  Brooklyn
is now 1-11.
The Dragons came roaring to town and won four straight.

Game 1: 83-67 Ewing 20-12, A. Walker 22pts.   Brooklyn was topped by P.J.
Brown                12-10.
Game 2: 96-88  Ewing 30-12.  P.J. Brown {fouled out - 17 min.}
                          Mobley 18, Lopez 15
Game 3: 83-72   Ewing 23-9,  Trent had 25pts.,- 10 rebounds.
                           No one else in double figures.  P.J. fouled out again {0 pts, 4 reb, - 15  min.}

Game 4: 98-72      Ewing 28-13, A.Walker 21-13.    Brown managed not
to foul out,  only 7pts anyway.   Trent had 13 to lead

After saluting  Patrick Ewing {25.3 pts p/g, 11.5 reb p/g} Nate said he was
on his way to do some holiday  shopping.   Leaving the new arena at
Metrotech, he subwayed his way uptown to Macy's .

++++++As Nate was about to enter the famous department store he noticed a
familiar face ringing a bell wearing a red Santa Outfit.  It was none other
than Marvin Barnes.+++++

######Overcome with holiday sentiments Nate {offerred Marv a job as bench
coach}  nah!!!!  That's old New York, Miracle on 34th street stuff.####

What he really did was throw some change in the bucket, wish Barnes good
luck in the future, and proceed to spend $10,000 on gifts for friends,
family and self.

Galactic 7-0 after home sweep of Dazzlers

The Aces are 10-0, East Asia and is 10-1 and Galactic is now 7-0 after dulling the Dazzlers. Coach Steve Walters again tells the tale:

Thunder Rolls To Three-Game Sweep!

Game 1: Davenport   92
             Galactic    115
Thunder put 8 men in double figure scoring
lead my Kemp's 24 . Team shot 63% FG
percentage with 37 assists. Coleman had 14
boards in 24 min.
Dazzlers were lead by Kukoc's 25 points
and a team total of 12 steals but 24 turnovers.

Game 2: Davenport 107
              Galactic   110
Both teams shot 48% from the floor and over
85% from free throw line and for the first time this
season Thunder were out assisted 31-30. The teams
were almost equal in all catagories. The difference in
the game looks to be shooting 3's Dazzlers 2-10 while
Thunder was 4-15. Hornacek's 3 on last shot of game
was to little to late. A.Johnson and Smits lead the
Dazzlers scoreing with 24 and 21. For Thunder it was
Pippen with 20 points, 8 assists, 8 rebounds and
Barkley with 20 points, 6 assists and 15 rebounds.

Game 3: Davenport  85
             Galactic   115
Thunder was lead suprisingly by Derek Coleman with
23 points and 10 rebounds, Richmond and Stockton
added 20 points each, as the team shot 64% from field.
Pippen lead team in assists with 11. Galactic took a dive
at the free throw line shooting only 58%(15-26).
Dazzlers shot only 40% from field, but Olajuwon
was (8-15) good for 21 points as well as 11 rebounds.
A major factor in the score was the 13 steals by Galactic
and the 23 turnovers by Davenport.

Galactic gets out to 4-0 start vs. the Jams

Galactic Coach Steve Walters tells the tale:

Thunder storms to four game sweep:

Game 1: 127-105
Galactic has 42 assists(no player more than 8)
as four players go over the 20 point mark on a
FG % of  67.
    Houston 25 and R. Wallace 24 combine for 49
points for Jams.

Game 2: 112-97
30 more assists for Thunder as 7 players hit double
figures in scoring while shooting 65% from the field.
Jams have Houston 21 and R.Wallace 26 combining
for 47 points and a team total of 21 offensive Rebounds.

Game 3: 113-71
28 more assists for Thunder as Barkley leads way with
19 rebounds and 21 points. Team FG% of 62 percent.
Chapel Hill was held to team FG% of 31 percent and was
out rebounded 29 to 53.

Game 4: 99-62
26 more assists for Thunder as Richmond lead all scores
with 26 points(6 players in double figure scoring) Team shot
series low 58% from the field.
Jams held to FG% of 33 percent. Wallace had 18 points
and Houston added 12.

Druids weave their magic vs. two teams

Once again, Mark Feeney's colorful prose tells the tale, complete with the new Druids logo:

Druids call on King David  to hold off Brooklyn Goliath

By Mark Feeney
BETTENDORF NEWS

It seems as if Bettendorf Druid Coach Tom Davis has to call on a new hero every night. Saturday, with the score tied at 77 and the Brooklyn Tigers ready to pounce, he told his point guard Greg Anthony to get the ball to Kornell David.

“The King,” as his teammates call him,  responded by scoring 12 of his 16 points in a five-minute stretch to enable the Druids to hold onto a 101-96 victory at The Mark of the Quad-Cities. The win gave the Druids a 5-1 record at home this season.

“I thought Kornell could take whoever was guarding him off the dribble tonight,” Davis said. “He seemed extremely quick.” Anthony agreed.

“Every time The King touched the ball in that stretch he scored,” Anthony said. “He was in a zone.”

David started the run with a put-back on which he was fouled with 9:33 to play. His free throw gave the Druids an 80-77 lead.

By the time he drove for a twisting, reverse layup with 4:30 left, Bettendorf had stretched its lead to nine, 93-84.

“David usually only plays about the first six minutes of the fourth quarter in our rotation,” Davis said. “He was so hot, I decided to stick with him for an extra couple of minutes, and I was glad I did.”

If he hadn’t, Gary Trent’s name probably would have been in the lead of this story.

Trent, who finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds, scored 10 of Brooklyn’s last 18 points to keep the game close.

“He was about our only offensive weapon tonight,” Brooklyn Coach Nate Bowman said. “He and P.J. Brown dominated the inside."

Druids' 4th quarter magic extinguishes fiery Dragons

By Mark Feeney
BETTENDORF NEWS

Sometimes it takes the Bettendorf Druids awhile to weave their defensive spell. But the incantations of Coach Tom Davis created a magical experience in the final six minutes of Sunday night's game that rarely was seen last season at the Mark of the Quad-Cities.

"When we take it up a notch defensively," Davis said after the Druids' 87-83 victory over the East Asia Dragons in SABL action, "Our opponents have to expand a huge amount of energy just to get the ball up court. >"When we turn it up three or four notches, like we did tonight, it becomes almost impossible from them to score.  When we get that kind of effort, it's magic."

When Patrick Ewing stuffed through his 16th point of the night with 6:19 to play in the fourth quarter, it gave the Dragons an 81-73 lead. A half minute later, with Greg Anthony on the free throw line for the Druids, Davis called his other four players into a quick huddle.

"He told us to tighten up our press and go to a double-team on Armstrong if they broke it," Kornel David said. "He also said some things best not repeated. We Druids have to keep our little rituals within the sect, you know."

Whatever he said worked. The Druids outscored the Dragons 14-2 the rest of the way. East Asia's only points in that stretch came on two free throws from Antoine Walker. Anthony made his two free throws, and David hit one of two on the next possession. Anthony then scored on a breakaway after a steal.

After Walker's two free throws with 4:37 left, Larry Johnson and Dee Brown took over. Brown hit a fastbreak layup off a feed from Anthony. Johnson swished two free throws. Brown hit another layup to give the Druids the lead at 84-83, and Johnson scored on a fastbreak pass from Brown.

"LJ and I got hot down the stretch," Brown said. "But it was the defense that set everything up."

Jaimie Feick clinched it by hitting one of two free throws with :43 remaining. Walker led all scorers with 18 points for the Dragons. Ewing had 16 and nine rebounds, but hit only 7 of 19 shots.

J.R. Reid had 15 for the Druids, seven in the second quarter. Johnson added 12. The Druids outrebounded the Dragons 50-38. Ron Harper grabbed 10 boards, while Reid and Feick each had eight and Malik Rose grabbed 7 in 19 minutes. The Druids won despite shooting only 55 percent at the foul line.

Aces now 10-0, East Asia Dragons 7-0

The St. Lucie Aces shot 60% from the field to sweep the Miles Bulldogs at Miles 3-0, upping their blazing start to 10-0. Since winning their first four games, Miles has lost their last seven and now have a 4-7 record.

Also red-hot are the fire-breathing Dragons, who, thanks to a home win over Bettendorf, are now 7-0.

As soon as I get enough results from everyone, I'll be posting all sorts of stats, so stay tuned.

East Asia and Aces gallop to super starts

Most of us haven't played any games yet, but two teams, East Asia (6-0) and St. Lucie (7-0) are roaring out of the starting gate. St. Lucie has swept its home series vs. Miles (3-0) and McLean (4-0).

Here's a report from East Asia Coach Paul Bennett on his victory at home over Miles:

Miles   16 15 16 27  - 74
E.A.    21 27 24 27  - 99

Malone had 24, Mookie 25 and no one else over 6. Team shot 34% to EA's 50%.
EA had 5 in double figures, led by Walker with 21.

Brooklyn Tigers take a dive into cellar

Brooklyn is now 1-6 and falling. Another report from Tiger Coach Steve Feldheim details the reversal of fortune:

BROOKLYN EAGLE SPORTS

11-28-99

Coach  Nate Bowman can relax a bit now.  He has some job security.  With a
home loss to Great Lakes  -- although a bit close -- {86-80},  he has
followed up with 5 impressive losses on the road. 1 to Davenport and 4 in
East Asia.  The losses against the Dragons were by an average of 24 pts.
P/game.  Potential coaching candidate Marvin Barnes was heard mumbling
something about finding work for the "season".
Barnes was seen later trying on red pajamas and carrying a white beard.

1999-2000 Season Preview is on the web!

Our annual post-draft analysis is now posted at 1999-2000 Season Preview. Enjoy.

1999-2000 season underway with a surprise

The defending Royal Conference Champion Brooklyn Tigers were not figured to be in the playoffs this season, but look out! That pre-season prognostication may be wrong! Steve Feldheims's Tigers are 1-0. Here's the story from Steve himself:

BROOKLYN  EAGLE  SPORTS

12/18/99 - Brooklyn, NY

Tigers coach Nate Bowman was seen storming off the court after the game and
held a closed doors meeting with the team.  Bowman who was hired with
explicit directions to lead this ream to one of the top three draft picks.
He was heard to be raging at his players, describing them as a bunch of
ungrateful overachievers.  Brooklyn owner Steve Feldheim was said to be
contacting possible replacements for Nate.  Marvin Barnes appears to be his
first choice.

Tigers never fell behind badly, at 3:10 in the 4th BKL led by 7, then the
expected seen to be happening the lead was down to 3 at 1:46.  0:36 -
Hornacek hits to FT's to tie.  0:18 - Trent fouled by Avery, he misses both,
grabs rebound, and hits it {BKL by 2}.  0:08 - Johnson hits Kucok with
Dazzler ties game.  0:04 - BKL time out, run play for Trent, gets Avery on
the switch and stuffs it in.  {BKL by 2}.  0:02 - Davenport timeout, can't
get it to Smits.  81-79 Brooklyn.
