FROM COMMISSIONER SCOTT ELLIS, 2ND AMER. BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Stats are near

Finally stats should be arriving at your doorsteps (in a separate mailing) about a week or so after you read this.

I appointed two stats guys, one for each conference, but that was a mistake. The way the dumb SOM Basketball computer game compiles stats, splitting stats between the conferences is too much work to coordinate.

So, effective with your next shipment of stats (JAN. 21), send them all to our one and only stats guy, Steve Walters.

Since the only way you can get stats into the computer game is via individual game files, every coach has to send Steve a copy of their box scores, their individual game files on a disk (if you are a computer player) and a running total of your team stats. SEND STEVE YOUR STUFF! DON’T DELAY!

Additionally, keep sending game files and paper box score results to your opponents, too.

My apologizes for the late team stats. I’m giving myself two penalty points for my stupidity. A lot of coaches were late with stats, too, but I’m cutting everyone a break on this first stat reporting period. We all had a lot of new stuff to absorb.

Late instructions

One thing I’m not giving anyone any breaks on is late instructions or results. Everyone should have enough sense to get those out or let coaches know why they didn’t. If I find out about it, you’ll get penalty points. If you get a month behind, you’ll be out of the league.

Page 2 of the Constitution spells out what to do when a manager is late with instructions or results. Basically, if someone is late by even one day, the opposing coach should call him. If he’s late by a week, the opposing coach should call the commissioner. If I have to get involved, you’ve got to either have a good excuse (like you went into a coma) or you’ll get penalized.

Late trade report

Here’s a trade I forgot to report: Feldheim trades K. Malone and T.Legler to Rodriguez for K. Johnson & C. Laettner. This deal takes effect Feb. 1, Segment 8. Adjust your league rosters accordingly.

I really like all the trades everyone is making. More trades mean more involvement and more interest in the SABL. I hope we keep it up.

Keeping track

Now that you have rosters and regular newsletters, it’s going to be up to you to keep track of what happens. I’ll be sending out rosters twice a year from now on: Once before the draft and once after the draft. What happens in between you’ll have to keep track of. I’ll be sending out a schedule once a year, too.

This means when you read in the newsletter of a trade, adjust your league rosters. When you read of a new coach taking over, take out your pen and write in the new coach’s name on the appropriate roster and schedule. It’s not hard if you read the newsletter regularly and if you don’t, then I don’t want you in the SABL. I don’t have the time or inclination to hold your hand.

Enough of this junk! Next issue I hope to be analyzing stats and game highlights!
