The SABL BS

Volume 2 Issue 45 July 1998

FROM COMMISSIONER SCOTT ELLIS, 2ND AMER. BASKETBALL LEAGUE

Brooklyn Tigers are 1998 SABL Champs!

Steve Feldheim's Brooklyn Tigers are the first two-time champs in Second American Basketball League history as they defeated Nick South's Blocher Bombers 4 games to 3 in an exciting final series!

Blocher won Game 3 108-100, despite 27 from Brooklyn's Karl Malone. Shawn Kemp had 16 for Blocher and Nick Anderson had 18.

In Game 4, Blocher won again to even the series at 2-2, 112-104. Tyrone Hill had 18 points and 10 board for the Bombers and Eddie Jones had 25 points. Malone and John Stockton together had 46 for the Tigers.

In Game 5, Brooklyn won 94-83 as the Tigers' Jeff Hornacek socred 24 points.

But back at Brooklyn, Blocher won Game 6 to even things. Game 7 was a Brooklyn win to give Steve another championship. We'll have more stats later on this final. Congratulations to Steve and Nick for a great season!

New coaches join the SABL ranks!

Ron Karbowski, a veteran of the longtime Continental Basketball Association, is the new coach of the Austin Grasers, which he has renamed the Great Lakes Magicians. His phone number is 248-366-8655 and address is 8750 Buckskin, Commerce Township, MI 48382. His email is rkarbow@aol.com.

The new coach of the Carbondale Young Punks is another Amazing Feeney brother, Mike Feeney, of Memphis, TN. I don't have his phone or address yet, but his email is Memfas@aol.com.

Finally, taking over the Michigan Gearjammers for Tom Gantert, who is still having computer problems, is my nephew, 16-year-old Cody Beard, of 3595 S.E. Sarah Court #186, Stuart, FL 34994. His phone is 561-781-1166 and email address is vickyt@gate.net. His new team name is the Carolina Roughnecks.

I'm sure we'll welcome these new coaches with many trade offers this summer.

And Tom Gantert, the first commissioner and founder of the SABL, is always welcome to rejoin us when his computer is ready to go and whenever we have another coaching opening.

Divisional realignment shaping up

With our new coaches, our divisional 1998-99 SABL divisional alignment is shaping up. If no other coaching changes happen, here's how we could look next season:

Royal West - Finney, Holcomb, Meade, Garden City Gladiators, Tulsa

Royal East - Calgary, Blocher, Richmond, Great Lakes, Brooklyn

Classic South - Aces, Galactic, Chapel Hill, Carolina, Akron

Classic North - Miles, Druids, Dazzlers, Tri City, Young Punks

The Punks, although they're in Memphis (I assume Mike Feeney will change the team name soon), are in the North division because the coach is an Amazing Feeney brother. Amazing Feeney brothers all have to be in the same division. The only real problem with this alignment is the placement of Dave Scott's Akron team in the South division. Maybe the Blimps are from South Akron.

I prefer the above alignment, but there is another possibility:

West - Miles, Druids, Dazzlers, Tri City, Young Punks

East - Aces, Galactic, Chapel Hill, Brooklyn, Carolina

South - Finney, Holcomb, Meade, Garden City, Tulsa

North - Calgary, Great Lakes, Akron, Richmond, Blocher

Everybody fits here from a geographic (or family) perspective, but except for Tulsa, the South Division isn't really a Southern division.

Let me know what you think about these possible alignments ASAP.

Need dues money by Sept. 1

Our advertisement in Strat Fan is generating several responses, so please get your 1998-99 dues money to me ASAP to retain your coaching slot. If I don't get your dues money, then you don't draft and you'll be bounced from the SABL in September.
