1998 SABL playoffs the smoothest ever!
I again want to thank all of you for making the 1997-98 SABL season the best we ever had. Check the hyperlinks below for box scores.
Royal Conference - Round 1
Richmond beats Davenport 4 games to 0. Game 1 - Richmond 111, Davenport 96; Game 2 - Richmond 127, Davenport 105; Game 3 - Davenport 111, Richmond 117; Game 4 - Davenport 101, Richmond 112. Davenport couldn't stop the Raiders' Gatling gun in Game 3.
Round 2
Tri City tops Seattle 4 games to 1. Game 1 - Seattle 110, Tri City 106; Game 2 - Seattle 98, Tri City 110; Game 3 - Tri City 108, Seattle 75; Game 4 - Tri City 113, Seattle 99; Game 5 - Tri City 118, Seattle 108. Here's Seattle's Game 3 debacle.
Round 3
Blocher advances to SABL Finals by beating Tri City 4 games to 2. Game 1 - Blocher 101, Tri City 115; Blocher 96, Tri City 99; Game 3 - Blocher 111, Tri City 95; Game 4 - Blocher 122, Tri City 102; Game 5 - Blocher 127, Tri City 100; Game 6 - Blocher 94, Tri City 87. Blocher shoots 43 percent in Game 6 and still wins!
Classic Conference - Round 1
Heat beats Gearjammers 4 games to 1. Game 1 - Gearjammers 101, Heat 112; Game 2 - Gearjammers 111, Heat 106; Game 3 - Heat 109, Gearjammers 102; Game 4 - Heat 104, Gearjammers 100; Game 5 - Heat 106, Gearjammers 99. Despite shooting just 44 percent in Game 5, the Heat win it. I think R. Wallace's 7 offensive boards and 26 points had something to do with it.
Galactic thumps Calgary 4 games to 0. Game 1 - Calgary 93, Galactic 125; Game 2 - Calgary 106, Galactic 118; Game 3 - Galactic 112, Calgary 85; Game 4 - Galactic 136, Calgary 120. Galactic shoots 64 percent from the floor in Game 4.
Round 2
Galactic upsets Aces 4 games to 2. Game 1 - Galactic 120, Aces 119; Game 2, Galactic 133, Aces 123; Game 5 - Aces 121, Galactic 137; Game 6, Galactic 129, Aces 119. You knew something was amiss for the Aces when Mugsy Bogues lead St. Lucie in scoring in Game 2.
Round 3
Brooklyn makes second appearance in SABL Finals by beating Galactic 4 games to 2. Game 3 - Brooklyn 108, Galactic 107; Game 4, Brooklyn 108, Galactic 122; Game 5 - Brooklyn 115, Galactic 112.
Galactic lead by three points with just 11 seconds left in Game 3. Karl Malone had the ball outside with Mark Davis guarding him, and the Mailman delivered with a jumper. Then, with 6 seconds left, John Stockton stole the ball, passed it to Malone, who hits another jumper at the buzzer to win it for the Tigers. Wow!
1998-99 Schedule and new rosters are up
Our new schedule for next season is up and so are our rosters for next season. Check it out!
Almost time to pay your 1998-99 SABL dues
Yep, it's that time of year to pay your SABL $20 annual dues. They are due Aug. 1 and you can't draft on Oct. 24 without paying me.
Tigers take on Bombers in SABL Finals!
It was Steve vs. Steve in the Classic Conference finals and Steve won - Feldheim, that is, 4 games to 2, as the Brooklyn Tigers advance to the SABL finals! Brooklyn had beaten Charles Dillingham's Holcomb Heat in the previous round, in another 6-game tussle. This is Steve Feldheim's second trip to the SABL Finals, having won the championship in 1996.
In the Royal Conference, Nick South's Blocher Bombers beat Chris Feeney's Tri City Blackhawks in yet another 4 to 2 affair, making Blocher our 1998 Royal Conference champs.
Congratulations to Nick and Steve Feldheim and may the better team win in the SABL finals, which are now underway!
UBA vet Tommy Field joins the SABL
If his location is any indication, Chapel Hill's Tommy Field is going to have a very successful SABL career! Tommy is the new coach of the former Motor City Maulers, which he has renamed the Chapel Hill Jams. Give him a call at 919-929-6051, or better yet, email him at Cubbbted@aol.com
His address is 228 Hayes Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Tommy was a faithful member of the longtime Universal Basketball Association that folded last year. Another UBA alumni is the Heat's Charles Dillingham. And even though he lives in the basketball temple, only time will tell if Tommy becomes our league's Dean Smith.
Who's trading?
Heat sends B. Edwards, S. Mitchell & C. Mills to the Panthers for Curry, S. Walker & T. Knight.
Aces send Austin, Sprewell & Tulsa's 3rd Round Draft Pick to Heat for G. Robinson.
Heat sends Mutombo & E. Johnson to Seattle for Laettner & Donyell Marshall.
Regular season stats bite the big one
As most of you probably have figured out, I'm a computer hardware buff. I'm constantly upgrading my system to make it faster and better. This is usually a good thing, but during my last upgrade to Windows 98, I accidently erased my backup hard drive and permanently lost our 1997-98 SABL team stats. All we have are the incomplete stats on our website.
My sincere apologies for this and if you have any final team stats that you have complied yourself, send them to me and I'd be glad to put them up.
