Our 1999-2000 league realignment

The SABL is entering a new period of stability. We are already full up with coaches for next year and I have one solid backup, with more emailing me every week to inquire. So there's no reason we can't figure out right now who's going to be playing where in our next regular season. Only one change, but this is how it shapes up:

Royal Conference

West Division - Deerfield, Garden City, Finney, Holcomb, Meade

East Division - Brooklyn, Memphis, East Asia, Richmond, Akron

Classic Conference

South - Carolina, Chapel Hill, Tulsa, St. Lucie, Galactic

North - Miles, Bettendorf, Davenport, Tri-City, Great Lakes

The South and West don't change at all. The only change is that the Great Lakes and Memphis franchises swap East and North divisions. I'm assuming that I may be getting new team names for Great Lakes and Memphis soon.

Finney goes up 2-0 over Richmond Raiders

Doug Dillingham's Finney Longhorns have won the first two games against Frank Rowley's Richmond Raiders in Round 2 action of the Royal Conference series playoffs. The action now goes to Richmond for the next 3 games.

Game 1 went down to the wire as Finney's Kobe Bryant hit 2 free throws at the end of the game to win it 115-113. Game 2 went into overtime on a Longhorn putback by Theo Ratliff and Doug's squad won the overtime and the game 114-108. More later.

Thunder blunders against St. Lucie Aces

Last year, Galactic took out the Aces in a six-game Round 1 playoff series. Galactic was then beaten by Brooklyn, who went on to win the 1998 SABL World Championship. This year, however, the Aces have went up 3 games to zero over the Thunder in the Classic Conference finals and all three were high-scoring matches.

Game 1: 143-118. David Robinson scored 32 for St. Lucie and Galactic's Chris Crawford bucketed 23. Patrick Ewing had 18 rebounds and Hakeem 11.

Game 2: With both teams pressing and fastbreak every minute of the game, it was 156-144. The Admiral again scored 32 and had 16 boards. Shaq and Grant Hill made 27 points each, while Payton had 13 assists and Rod Strickland had 12. Galactic's Crawford scored 42 points.

Game 3: 163-143, with both teams again pressing and fastbreaking every minute. The Admiral scored 21 points and made 8 boards in 16 minutes before fouling out at the end of the 2nd quarter. Grant Hill scored 38 and Pippen had 27 points for the Aces. But the coup de grace was the 22 assists by Strickland, a new playoff and all-time SABL record. 21 of those assists were dazzlers. The Aces had 52 total assists this game and 103 field goal attempts (63% made). Once again, Galactic's Chris Crawford was brilliant in defeat, making 38 points in 25 minutes and netting 16 of 18 free throw attempts. Galactic's Terrell Brandon had 14 assists and 19 points.

Game 4 is next!

Thunder rolls over Bulldogs in 4-0 sweep

Steve Walters' Galactic Thunder swept the North Division champion Miles Bulldogs 4 games to zero to advance the Classic Conference finals.

Steve won Game 1 117-91 behind 26 points each from Mitch Richmond and Patrick Ewing. Ewing also had 13 boards. Miles shot only 42 percent from the field.

Game 2 saw a 117-106 Galactic win, with Richmond making 39 points and Hakeem grabbing 16 rebounds. Doug Christie had 25 points for Miles.

Game 3 was 95-76 Thunder, with Richmond once again leading with 29 points. Ewing had 13 rebound, Hakeem had 11. Terrell Brandon got 11 assists. Miles shot only 39 percent from the field.

In Game 4, it was Galactic 118, Miles 97. Every game Richmond led in scoring, this time with 28 points. Brandon had 11 assists and Ewing had 11 boards. Miles hit 41 percent from the field.

Now Galactic takes on arch-rival St. Lucie, with the winner of that series going to the 1999 SABL Finals. Woo-boy, it's gettin' hot in the Sunshine State!

"Evil" Druids drag Pippen from Bulldogs

The following is an unpaid apolitical announcement found in a recent email from Miles Bulldogs Coach Tom "Trader" Jargo:

""He's pure evil," Davenport Dazzlers owner Kevin Feeney said of his brother
Mark.

Well, the Evid Druid has forced the meek Miles Bulldogs into a trade, using
intimidation, coercion, death threats, blackmail, mind games, skulduggery and
loitering.

The Bulldogs ship Scottie "Where the hell's Bettendorf?" Pippen to Bettendorf
for the Druids' first-round pick in 2000.

"Obviously, this deal greatly benefits the Druids," Mark Feeney said,
emerging from a coma which he fell into after learning that Bulldogs owner
Tom Jargo was stupid enough to agree to such a lopsided deal.

"Obviously, I'm banking on the Druids stinking up the joint next season,"
retorted Jargo, who has three first-round draft picks in 2000. "He's going
with Pippen, Chapman and 12 rookies."

Stay tuned ..."

Aces sweep Tri City in Round 2

The St. Lucie Aces have beaten Tri City 4 games to zero in our first Round 2 playoff series results. Unlike last year, when the Aces were beaten by Galactic in Round 2, St. Lucie now advances to the Classic Conference championships and will take on the winner of the Miles/Galactic series.

Brooklyn goes up 2-0 over Deerfield

Coach Steve Feldheim's Brooklyn Tigers went up 2 games to zero over Doug Crandal's Deerfield Kings in Round 2 action in the Royal Conference bracket. The Tigers won the first game 135-110. Brooklyn won Game 2 129-109. The series now goes to Doug's court for three games. Stay tuned.

Leon's sticking with the good old SABL

Coach Leon Rogers of the Meade Jayhawks has more time to play Strat basketball again, so he's told me he's retaining the reins of his team. That's great news from a great guy and let's all send him an email with outrageous trade offers as our way of saying "We love you man!"

Blocher is now the East Asia Dragons

Coach Paul Bennett has changed the name of the Blocher Bombers to the East Asia Dragons, who will now burn through their opponents in the SABL.

Picks adjusted, rosters aren't until after playoffs

Our trading activity's picked up recently, but you may have noticed that the players in our on-line team rosters have not changed yet. That's because I want to wait until the playoffs are over first. Once we have a new 1999 SABL Champion, I'll move everybody!

However, I have switched draft picks.

Latest 1999 Draft Order: 1. Great Lakes (final) 2. Holcomb (final) 3. Memphis (final) 4. Chapel Hill  (final) 5. Tulsa (final) 6. East Asia (final) 7. Bettendorf (final) 8. Meade (final) 9. Davenport (final) 10. Tri-City 11. Garden City 12. Akron 13. Carolina 14. Galactic 15. Deerfield 16. Miles 17. Richmond 18. Brooklyn 19. Finney 20. St. Lucie

Early reminder: Dues are due Sept. 1

There's plenty of time, but I just want to let you know that 1999-2000 SABL dues will be due Sept. 1.

Richmond tops Akron 4 games to 2

Frank Rowley's Richmond Raiders are celebrating their first playoff series win by beating Dave Scott's Akron Blimps 4 games to 2. Dave also is to be congratulated for making his first playoff appearance this season. This means our first playoff round is complete as Richmond now takes on Doug Dillinghams's Finney Longhorns in Round 2.
