Issue 99 February 2003
FROM COMMISSIONER SCOTT ELLIS, 2ND AMER. BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Penalty point report
Now the part of my commissioner's duties that I like the least, assessing penalty points. I also check our Yahoo! group site, too, to look for results, but since Yahoo! is not reliable, you must email me directly to avoid getting penalty points. Please let me know ASAP if I've made an error. Sometimes my email server screws up. And if you are gonna be late for some legitimate reason, let me know by telephone or email what's going on so you can avoid getting penalty points.
It's your responsibility to follow up with coaches that don't send you instructions. You have to stay on top of the schedule to find out who's supposed to be sending you what and when. "I didn't get any instructions" better not be your only defense. Did you contact your opposing coach and make an effort to get those instructions? "Why did you wait and let the games get two weeks late?" will be the question I'm gonna ask.
Home games are the home coach's primary responsibility. You need to let me know that you have tried to contact your late opponents to avoid penalty points. If you didn't try to contact them and find out what's going on, then you'll probably get some penalty points. Get enough of them and you'll drop down places in the draft.
LATENESS KILLS LEAGUES. IF YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO PLAY THE GAMES, YOU DONT HAVE TIME TO BE IN THE SABL. UNLIKE OTHER LEAGUES YOU MAY HAVE BEEN IN, THE TRAINS RUN ON TIME HERE.

Autoplay Bakersfield, home and away, for the rest of the season
Chalk up another one for Strat's stupid old DOS basketball game.
Bakersfield Coach David Squires keeps an old Windows98 computer around just to play Strat's basketball game. It finally died this month, and since he can't play Strat on his new Windows XP computer, that means he is out of commission for the rest of the season. He isn't quitting the league. But he can't play his games. He will have to quit the league this fall, however, if the game doesn't go to Windows. I'm confident that it will make the switch, though.
Autoplay Bakersfield and play any home or away games you have with them and send me and David the results. Of course, since the Blades are on autoplay, that means Bakersfield cannot be in the playoffs because autoplayed teams are not allowed to make the playoffs. Another bummer, but it's Strat's fault, not David's.
Hang in there David and good luck next year!

Dazzlers (21-47) stun Bulldogs (22-45) - Part II
After sweeping the hapless Bulldogs at home, the Davenport Dazzlers went north
and took two of three from Miles before a comatose crowd at the Mayo
Civic Center in Rochester, Minn.
To chants of "We want the Druid," Miles lost Game 1 89-78 and Game 3 97-88.
Sandwiched between was a 95-90 win in Game 2. Bulldog fans were burning Miles
owner Tom Jargo in effigy in the streets of Rochester.
"Too many turnovers," said Miles Coach Hayden Fry, summing up a lost season for
the uninspired Bulldogs.
To accusations that the Bulldogs are tanking it for a great draft pick, Fry
said: "I guaran-dang-tee that's false. We already have the talent here; whoever
we draft will be hard-pressed to find minutes next year. We have the talent; we
need a better manager."
The Bulldogs have found that man, shelling out millions of dollars and
truckloads of Kool-Aid to hire the Evil Druid to run the team next year.
"Mark will get the most out of this team -- no doubt about it," Fry said. "The
talent is in place; we'll win with Mark."
Mark Feeney, who is moving next door to Dusty Baker in the "Our Savior" neighborhood, could not be reached for comment.

McLEAN (37-24) TAKES TWO OF THREE FROM FINNEY (15-41)
The Nats took two of three close and hard fought games in McLean by scores of 89-95, 97-96, and 105-104. The Longhorns took the first game by scoring 20 points in a row late in the third period, building a 13 point lead. The Nats cut it to three but ran out of gas in the final minute. Ron Artest hit 13 of 17 field goal attempts in scoring 29 points. Jerry Stackhouse led the Nats with 23, but missed five free throws including two late in the fourth quarter.
Game two was the real cliff hanger, as it was close all the way. Down by a point with 18 seconds left, Jalen Rose was open for a jump shot. Rather than hold for the final shot, he took it and hit it. The Longhorns called time, but Brian Grant passed the ball as time expired. Stackhouse had 35; Doug Christie had 24.
Game three was also a nail biter. The Longhorns' defense was terrific, but perhaps a tad aggressive with 31 fouls. Stackhouse hit 16 of 18 free throws, and was only two of 12 from the floor. but one of those two was a dunk with 30 seconds left to give the Nats a two point lead. On the ensuing position, Andre Miller switched off on Artest, and stole the ball. When he pulled up rather than take the fast break shot, he was intentionally fouled. He sank them both for a four point lead. Jason Richardson hit a three point shot at the buzzer for the final margin. Stackhouse had 20; Christie again led Finney with 23.
Richmond (28-10) beats Roosters (13-35) at Good News
Richmond used a strong 4th quarter to come from behind to defeat the Roosters. Iverson scored 40 but it was not enough.
Jams (15-39) beat Davenport (16-39) in Chapel Hill
Miles (20-38) vs. Classic West Wrap-Up
The Miles Bulldogs finished a 5-game home
stand against the Classic West Division with a 3-2 record. The Dogs managed
wins over Tulsa, Finney and Good News while losing to Holcomb and
Bakersfield before a sub-zero crowd at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester,
Minn.
Bakersfield, led by Glenn Robinson's 31 points, beat Miles 118-110, spoiling
brilliant performances by Reggie Miller and Antoine Walker, who combined to
hit 13 of 20 shots from beyond the arc. A 50-26 rebound advantaged powered
the Blades.
Miles broke open a tight game in the fourth quarter to topple Finney, 92-86.
The Dogs built a five-point lead midway through the final frame on a free
throw by Ron Mercer and a bucket from Matt Harpring. Moments later Reggie
Miller hit a three-pointer to boost the lead to eight points, with 6:06
left, and Miles hung on from there.
Miles offset a 38-point performance by Allen Iverson with 20 by Walker and
17 by Mike Bibby to spell bad news for Good News, 108-97. Wasn't much help
for Iverson in the game.
Holcomb jumped out early and never looked back in a 97-89 win over the Dogs.
Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 28 to lead the Heat. Bibby paced Miles with 17.
Miles ended the home stand with a 104-96 win over Tulsa, utilizing a 54-36
rebounding advantage. Miles led by 13 after three quarters and hung on to
win. Walker had 25 points, while Miller pitched in 22. Jermaine O'Neal led
the Twisters with 26 points, but managed on 10-27 from the floor.
BLACKHAWKS (21-16) SCALPED AT McLEAN (35-23)
Stephon Marbury tried for a 48 minute night, but it did not pay off for Tri-City, as he finished with 21 on six for 16 shooting and the Blackhawks fell 115-99. Danny Fortson played well (13 points, ten boards), but overall McLean's big men contributed to a 43-32 rebound advantage, and Jerry Stackhouse again led six Nats in double figures with 30.
QUAD CITY ROCKS RIMS, MISSES TOO OFTEN AT MCLEAN
The Rimrockers only hit 35 percent from the floor, not enough to threaten the recently hot Nats, as Quad City fell 106-89. James Posey led Quad City with 15 on five for 14 shooting. Jerry Stackhouse had 20, Vlade Divac had 18 and 13 rebounds, and Andre Miller added eleven points and 15 assists.
Iowa (20-25) beats Roosters (13-33) at Good News
Iverson wins the personal battle vs McGrady 33-27 but Iowa wins the game in convincing fashion 108-94.
Blades & Raiders continue leads, other two divisions are close
Frank Rowley's Richmond Raiders (27-9) have the best record in the Royal Conference so far and are opening up a little lead in the East Division over Dave Scott's Akron Blimps (31-21). Both teams are locks to make the playoffs.
A real horse race is developing in the North Divsion. Kathleen Feeney's Quad City team (27-18) is holding on to first, just barely ahead of the charging Tri-City Blackhawks (21-15), coached by another Amazing Feeney, Chris. And don't count out Mark Feeney's Druids (24-26) just yet. Bettendorf (24-26), River City's Mike Resnick (20-29) and Dennis Derby's Iowa Tornadoes (19-25) are all vying for the last two playoff spots in the their conference.
Bakersfield (35-17), led by David Squires, is running away from Charlie Dillingham's Heat (27-28) in the West, while the Big Three are in a dead heat in the Super South Division. Steve Walter's Thunder (34-4) and Commissioner Scott Ellis's St. Lucie Aces (35-5) are virtually tied for first, while the defending SABL Champ, Paul Bennett's East Asia Dragons (47-11) are right behind them.
And even though McLean (33-23) is in fourth place in the South, Rob Storey's team looks like it's making the post-season tourney, too.
But for Tulsa (7-29), a new division isn't helping Coach Philip Creider. With the worst record so far this season, the Twisters could be getting a new tower in Yao Ming if they end up with the first pick in the draft. Tommy Field's Chapel Hill squad (13-39) has the second-worst record so far.
East Asia's Pierce (28.7 ppg) leads scorers, Big Ben leads in boards
The Dragons' Dynamic Duo of Paul Pierce and Ben Wallace (11.8 rpg) continue to dominate the SABL. Other leaders include Bakersfield's Brent Barry (.635 FG%), Miles' Reggie Miller (.935 FT%), Akron's Wally Szczerbiak (.528 3pt %), McLean's Andre Miller (12.5 apg), Good News' Allen Iverson (2.3 steals per game), Galactic's Gary Payton (4.2 turnovers per game), St. Lucie's Tim Duncan (3.3 blocks per game), and Ben Wallace (121 defensive stops).
McLEAN (32-23) CHASES OUT RENEGADES (20-29)
The Nats broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to beat River City, 117-107 in another close home game. The Renegades stayed close with 23 from Rip Hamilton and 22 from Quentin Richardson (5 for 8 on threes). But Stackhouse had 28 points and ten assists and Andre Miller had a triple double (16 points, 13 rebounds, and 13 assists) as the Nats won going away.
Aces (35-5) beat Quad City (27-18) at St. Lucie
Druids (24-26) take four from River City at Bettendorf
Good News (13-32) noses out Miles (17-36) at home
Roosters win a thriller 100-99. Iverson scores 27 for Good News.
McLEAN BEATS DRUIDS AND DAZZLERS (16-37)
The Nats won two at home, having a tougher time than they anticipated against the Druids and Dazzlers, but used a fourth quarter rally in each game to pull away at the end.
The Nats beat Bettendorf 101-93 with a 14-4 rally in the final four minutes. Cassell led the Druids with 22 while Stackhouse led the Nats with 29. Overall, the Nats 51 percent shooting was too much for the Druids, who shot only 40 percent (5 for 22 on threes).
The Nats overcame a truly dreadful first half (30 percent shooting at halftime, and behind by 42-31) to rally to win. It was still tied with about six minutes to play, but McLean's late shooting led to a 92-80 win. Mo Pete (Peterson) was high with 22, but the Dazzlers shot only 39 percent (5 for 20 on threes). Andre Miller was held to only seven assists, but led five Nats in double figures with 19.
Chapel Hill (13-39) swept at home by McLean (30-23)
Concerned Jams fans want to know why the Jams were routed at home, while being competitive when coached by HAL and Bob Storey AT McLean. The continual shuffling of lineups and irrational of benching of players like Michael Olowokandi, has the local media wondering if the SABL commissioner should just step in and write a mandatory GPL for this struggling franchise. The Chapel Hill Jams front office had a terse "no comment" at this suggestion, noting the job losses if they were all replaced by a "disk mailed from Florida'.
Tigers (17-35) and Richmond (27-9) split at Brooklyn
The Tigers win game one in the waning
moments by 109-105. Cuttino Mobley leading the way with 28. Nowitzki had 22
with 15 rebounds for Richmond.
Richmond wins easily 105-85. Stojo leads with 19.
Brooklyn led by 12 with a minute to go in the half. Richmond stormed through
the 3rd quarter 38-20 enroute to a 114-104 victory. Finley led Richmond with
21, Gasol led the Tigers with 27.
Brooklyn wins another tight one, Richmond had a 106-105 lead with :40
seconds left, Mobley again took the reins for the Tigers. He drove and
scored , and drew the foul and made it. With :16 left it was Brooklyn
108-106. Kenyon Martin committed a majorly dumb foul on "Super Dirk", but he
missed the pair, Johnson rebounded and Brooklyn ran out the clock for the
win.
Brooklyn (15-23) takes 2 of 3 from River City (20-24)
Time to get those January games finished and make February trades!
Howdy everyone! The season is going great. It’s February 1, so it’s time to get all your January games played so you can make your February trades.
In response to many coaches that have asked for it, I'm emailing you a February league file that has all our February trades in it and almost all our February games. It it the official SABL league standings, stats, etc., that I keep right here on my good old computer. (The file on our website is different. It is still the pristine, Day One league file that I sent you at the first of the season. I will not be changing this file - we might need it for a rainy day.)
The reason I'm sending you this is because we have a lot of trades taking effect for February 1 games. If you don't make your trades in exactly the order listed on the website, then this can cause game plans not to import and players not to play at their correct positions. IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS, UNZIP THIS FILE INTO YOUR STRAT BASKETBALL GAME AND USE IT INSTEAD. YOUR PROBLEMS WILL VANISH.
IF YOU DON'T HAVE THESE PROBLEMS, DO NOT USE THIS FILE. JUST KEEP PLAYING YOUR GAMES.
And here are those trades:
December 2002
THESE DEALS TAKE EFFECT FEB. 1, 2003. DO NOT ADJUST ROSTERS UNTIL YOU'VE PLAYED YOUR DECEMBER & JANUARY GAMES WITH THESE TEAMS. I WILL NOT ADJUST ROSTERS ON OUR WEBSITE UNTIL FEB. 1.
