Volume 2 Issue 57 August 1999

FROM COMMISSIONER SCOTT ELLIS, 2ND AMER. BASKETBALL LEAGUE

1999 Draftable Players list is posted

I know there's bound to be a few mistakes in it, but I have posted our 1999 Draftable Players list at the link above to help all of us see who is available in the dratt. Remember, you don't have to get a card to be drafted. Anyone that plays even one minute (Muresan) will get a computer record and can be used in our league. We are an all-computer league, so that makes it possible.

Please let me know if I've made any mistakes.

Alert!! Important dates approaching!

Direct from our 1999-2000 SABL  Schedule Of Events, here are dates that are fast approaching us:

I know a few of you have already sent me your cuts, but please review your roster on our website and make double sure they are right. You can keep 14 players, but then you can't draft. Every player you cut under 14, you get a draft pick. Keep 13 players, you draft once, keep 12 and you draft twice, and so on.

Also, there are still a few of you that haven't paid your dues. Sept. 1 is the deadline.

Storey takes over Carolina Roughnecks

The Carolina Roughnecks have always had one of the league's best teams on paper. Good coaching is what the team needs and hopefully, new Coach Robert Storey Jr. is the answer.

Despite the best of intentions (as recently as last week, as a matter of fact), Cody Beard has informed me he is not able to continue as Carolina's coach. That means Rob takes over the Roughnecks immediately and you can reach him at rstorey@erols.com or phone 703-534-4066. Rob's address is 1429 Ironwood Drive, McLean, VA 22101-2522. Rob has renamed his team the McLean Nationals. Please email or phone him and welcome him to our SABL! Rob, we all wish you the best of luck!

Brooklyn's Steve Feldheim is top coach!

Adding yet another accolade to his growing SABL account, Brooklyn Tiger Coach Steve Feldheim has been voted the SABL's first Coach Of The Year, for the 1998-99 season. Steve has amassed more SABL honors than any other coach and he richly deserves this one. Trading, drafting and coaching his squad to still more conference and divisional titles this year, he ranks as one of the greatest SABL coaches ever.

This year, his team won the most in the Royal Conference, going 71-11, 26 games ahead of the East Division's second-place team, the Richmond Raiders. Congratulations Steve and good luck in your rebuilding efforts.

Brooklyn's Karl Malone wins 1998-99 MVP

Steve Felheim is taking home yet another honor as his bulwark for the past four seasons, Karl Malone, receives the SABL's first MVP award. The Mailman not only delivered his team yet another conference championship, he was third in the league in scoring (26.3 ppg), 6th in rebounding (9.3 rpg), second in production (26.5) and fourth in defensive stops (143). He was first in free throws made (723) and attempts (954) and was third in the league in points scored (2160).

Aces sweep to 1998-99 SABL Championship

The St. Lucie Aces won their second SABL Championship by winning Games 3 and 4 vs. the Brooklyn Tigers at the Tigers' home court.

Game 3: 109-93. Shaq scored 28, Grant Hill bucketed 20 with 9 boards and 6 assists and Rod Strickland scored 17 and had 12 assists. Karl Malone was great for Brooklyn with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

Final 1999 Draft Order: 1. Great Lakes 2. Holcomb 3. Memphis 4. Chapel Hill 5. Tulsa 6. East Asia 7. Bettendorf  8. Meade 9. Davenport 10. Tri-City 11. Garden City 12. Akron 13. Carolina 14. Galactic 15. Deerfield 16. Miles 17. Richmond 18. Brooklyn 19. Finney 20. St. Lucie

Aces win first two in 1999 SABL finals

Game 1: 113-102, St. Lucie. Brooklyn's Karl Malone leads everyone in scoring with 29 points and grabs 9 boards, too. His buddy Kevin Willis gets 26 points, but the Aces, behind 23 points and 14 assists from Rapid Rod Strickland, take game one.

Brooklyn lead 48-46 at the half and St. Lucie's David Robinson got four fouls in the first quarter. But The Admiral (17 points) still played 31 minutes and didn't foul out. It was a bad omen for Brooklyn when Shaquille O'Neal (12 points) went 7 for 8 from the free throw line.

Game 2: 126-86, St. Lucie. This one wasn't pretty as 7 of the 8 Aces that played scored in double figures. Scottie Pippen scored 29 points to lead everyone. Malone had 25 points and 9 rebounds and Brooklyn's John Stockton has 14 points and 14 assists.

Now it's on to the Tiger arena for Games 3, 4 and 5. Brooklyn needs to sweep at home before heading back to the A-Dome.
